Neo-Burlesque Takes Over Down-under
Posted by Alec on October 12, 2011.
A small burlesque show has everyone talking down under at the Sydney Fringe Festival. On the opening night of ‘Gallery Burlesque’, the performers had the audience stunned with their alternative style of burlesque – one audience member described the performances:
“Bit by bit, she peels away her colourful costume to reveal rainbow socks, scanty underpants and some novelty boggle eyes covering her nipples. As she whips away a final piece of material, a kids’ party blower extends from her crotch.”
“Another act sees a ballerina glide gracefully across the stage en pointe before ripping off her skirt piece by piece, until she is left prancing in little more than a g-string. In a final gesture, the audience gasps as she pretends to defecate on the stage and smear herself with the results.” – Ninemsn
Despite the (at times) controversial and bizarre nature of this act, it has been well received by critics. Although this specific form of burlesque has only been around for a few years, in general burlesque has always pushed the boundaries of what is perceived as proper behaviour, and what should and shouldn’t be done in public.
