Let Them Eat Cake – Perfect Recipes For Bridal ShowersPosted by Hay Brunsdon on June 8 2017.
The Great British Bake Off is much like a cosy cup of tea you can happily sink into after a long day at work, perfect for the impending arrival of snug Autumnal evenings. Last night saw the new batch of bakers produce sandwich cakes, angel food cake and amazing chocolate creations, all of which inspired us to share some perfect recipes for bridal showers.
First things first, the best thing hotting up in the Bake Off kitchen this year is Paul Hollywood. With the same appeal as Simon Cowell (in that you’d kinda love for him to tell you off, have a little flirt with him then get marked out of 10 for it.) We particularly love it when Paul; adjudicator of angel cake, ombudsman of oreo cupcakes, the moderator of meringue smirks with those blue steel eyes whenever some poor character forgets to turn their oven on and/or uses salt instead of sugar.
Last episode had its fair share of mishaps but who didn’t love Howard’s Black Forest Cake complete with a chocolate bear?! He could be the next Brendan but before we start about his flamboyant bakes we thought we’d start with a simple Angel Food Cake.
This light-as-air treat is simple to make. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and sift a cup of self-raising flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Beat 12 large egg whites and add a dollop of cream of tartar to form soft peaks. Add a cup of sugar and 2 tsps of vanilla extract until stiff peaks are formed. Slowly sift in the flour mixture, in about 4 batches and fold in the mixture.
Gently spoon batter into an ungreased angel food cake pan with a removable bottom; smooth top. Cut a knife or small spatula through batter to release air bubbles. Bake until cake is golden and springs back when lightly pressed, 35 to 40 minutes. Invert pan; let cool in pan, 1 hour. Run a knife around the inside of the pan and around the tube to release cake, and unmold. Use knife to release cake from bottom of pan, and remove.
Serve with whipped cream and strawberries for a fresh slice of summer on a plate.
You could even tier 3 bakes, wedged together with cream and garnished with sumptuous colourful fruits.
