Foodie Hen Dos; Loafing About and Baking Recipes

Posted by Hay Brunsdon on April 15 2015.

We’re two episodes into this year’s series of The Great British Bake Off and already marvelling at how many recipes are perfect for foodie hen parties and wedding treats alike. We can all take inspiration from Kimberley; constantly dousing every baked good in petals she’d be perfect as a decorative wedding planner (though someone should remind her that she’s dealing with loaf of bread, not a honeymoon suite. Knead I say more?)

Foodie Hen DosThis week the contestants rose to the occasion by baking Breadsticks, tricky English Muffins and a show-stopping Celebration Loaf. As usual Paul Hollywood managed to look like he was penetrating people’s souls when smirking ‘welcome to yeast,’ and the highly irritating Ruby somehow managed to win star baker for her white chocolate and orange bake in the shape of a Peacock. Is she 5 years old?!

However some of the bakes did involve some fabulous flavours and we think home-made breadsticks or a freshly baked tear-and-share loaf are the perfect accompaniment to cocktail making hen party, especially one in which a hunky barman and his well-stocked bar can turn up at your house or hired holiday cottage.

An English Fizz (Gin, Elderflower Liqeur with fresh mint, lemon juice and home-made cucumber syrup) would be fabulous when sampled with some flavoursome Italian Grissini.

Add 7g of and 1 tsp of sugar to 280ml of warm water. Whisk together with 75g of plain white bread flour and leave for 10mins. Add 1tbs of oil and mix well before gradually adding 425g of flour, a pinch of sea salt, 5 tbsp of grated parmesan, 1 tbsp on blue cheese, 3 tsp of garlic powder, 3 tsp of mixed herbs and 2 tbsp of chopped jalapeños.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly oiled surface and knead for about 5-8 minutes, then put the dough into an oiled bowl, cover and leave for 30 minutes. Whilst the oven is preheating to 190C you can prepare the mixture for the rub; combine 50g grated parmesan, 2tsp garlic powder, 2tsp Italian seasoning and 2tsp jalapeño chilli powder.

Roll out your dough to a length of 11 inches, brush with egg yolk and press in the cheese and herb mixture before cutting into strips – twist gently into a spiral and bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
