50 Shades of Grey The Movie; Mummy Porn, Chick Flick or Hollywood Blockbuster?
Anyone and everyone has read 50 Shades of Grey (if they say they haven’t they’re lying) and now the screen adaptation is being hotly awaited. Never mind the fact it isn’t scheduled for release until Valentines Day 2015, we’re excited about it already. Between wondering how director Sam Taylor-Wood will depict the erotic tastes of Christian Grey, and how Jamie Dornan will fare as the handsome and incredibly successful male protagonist Christian Grey. Taylor-Wood is not one to stick to convention – her toy boy husband is twenty three years her junior – and we’re hoping she won’t shy away from the task of translating the world’s best-selling erotic fiction novel, it’s sold a whopping 90 million copies to date, into a Hollywood blockbuster.
Salman Rushdie may have deemed it the worst published thing he’s read, but we reckon he’s missed the point entirely. It’s not a work of great fiction, and neither is it trying to be. Although charity shops are groaning under the weight of second hand copies as people are offloading their copies, it’s an eminently readable page turner and a jolly good read. And we reckon it’ll make for cinematic gold.
With a seemingly simple plot line – a literature student meets a handsome, tormented billionaire and a love story enfolds – this will not be a run of the mill movie as BDSM is the name of the game with 50 Shades of Grey, that is bondage, discipline, domination, sadism and masochism. Not the usual subject matter of mainstream Hollywood movies. However, the book was the fastest-selling paperback of all time and that has to stand for something. Not only has BDSM entered the mainstream through 50 Shades, but people have lapped it up and embraced it, hanging on to every word written by author E. L. James.
The daughter of Hollywood great Melanie Griffith has been cast to play Anastasia Steele, the innocent college student who finds herself caught up in the dark bedroom antics of a successful businessman. Dakota Johnson is fairly unknown actress, and it is hard to predict how well she’ll cope with such a role, so we’re holding out on our opinion.
Filming has commenced and we’ve been given a cheeky glimpse of the set via Dornan’s Instagram. We know where we’ll be come Valentines Day 2015! Try one of our Flirt and Seduce or burlesque hen parties if you fancy being a bit of a tease yourself.
